Pumpkin Painting: This Halloween's Decorating
Alternative
by Derek Blandford
Three things come to mind when I think of
Halloween: trick or treat, costumes, and pumpkin decorating. Of the three,
pumpkin decorating is my favorite.
Halloween crafts are limited in scope only by your imagination, but while
most people choose carving as their method for pumpkin decorating, pumpkin
painting may be a better alternative. Here's three reasons why.
First, pumpkin painting gives you the ability to add color to your
creations. Unlike pumpkin carving where you are limited to the color of
your pumpkin, pumpkin painting allows you to mix and match colors
as much as you want to create the perfect pumpkin design. Paint on hair
and clothes, add color to the eyes, draw in scars or other facial
features, or do any number of other things that can help add life and
character to your pumpkin. It's all about creating a unique personality
for each pumpkin and painting can provide a dimension of color and
contrast that carving doesn't.
Second, pumpkin painting tends to be safer than pumpkin carving
because there are no sharp objects to deal with. When you have children in
the house who are too young to handle sharp objects safely, pumpkin
painting can be an excellent alternative to pumpkin carving, and most
kids LOVE to paint. Also, you don't risk starting a fire like you might if
you place a candle inside a carved pumpkin. Instead, try setting up some
small spotlights or flashlights to highlight and show off your painted
pumpkins.
Third, you won't have to deal with the mess of pulling out the pumpkin's
innards. That mush seems to get everywhere. It gets on your hands, on your
clothes, on the floor, in your hair, and it's just plain icky to deal
with. Why create more hassle for yourself when you don't have to? Since
you don't have to tear out the innards, your painted pumpkins will last
much longer than their carved counterparts.
This Halloween when you are getting ready to decorate your pumpkin,
consider giving pumpkin painting a try. It's a ton of fun and your
pumpkins are sure to stand out from the crowd. Just be prepared when you
see all your neighbors standing on your porch gawking at your festive
creations.
